The Wines of California
The
perfect weather of California helps
local vineyards produce wonderful wines.
With abundant sun and water, a
temperate climate, ocean breezes, and
misty microclimates of light and shade,
California wine country naturally
produces high-quality vintages. It is
rare to find a place so plentiful in all
the good things that the outdoors can
offer. Instead of something wild from
the Wild West, California wines have the
mellow, golden, and sophisticated taste
of sunlight.
You might take a moment in the sunset to
sip an aromatic cabernet sauvignon or a
buttery golden Chardonnay. Let the
demands and hectic pace of the day slip
away as the night softly descends and
you unwind. In California, the Golden
State, the word “domestic” pulls more
weight than “imported.” Its varietals
rival the best anywhere in the world.
With its diversity of climates, it
offers a diversity of wines to satisfy
every taste. Even the most
discriminating palate agrees that these
wines offer quality and excellent
flavor.
Until 1849, when the rumor of gold
brought a great influx of people from
many different nations to California,
winemaking was largely the province of
the church. Today California’s wine
culture reflects the know-how and
enthusiasm of many different ethnic
groups who came to find gold but stayed
to make wine.
